Our Diabetes Speciality clinic is comprised of different unit and departments such as:

a. Clinical, diagnostic, and research units

The diabetes clinic of the Endocrine and Metabolism Research Institute is comprised of several clinical, diagnostic, and research units at a single medical complex. These units are in close interaction so that to provide a multifaceted approach to diabetes care and to advance medical knowledge production through research.

b. Initial Visit Unit

Patients are visited by trained general practitioners at their initial visit for a comprehensive and detailed history taking and physical examination. After a thorough clinical assessment, patients with symptoms and signs of diabetes are referred to an endocrinologist for further diagnostic investigations and treatment plans. It is noteworthy that appointments may be made through phone calls or in person visits.

c. Patient Education Unit

Patient education unit aims to provide diabetic patients with the information they need regarding their disease such as its etiology, the complications and their preventive measures. Face-to-face education is conducted by experts in the field in order to build the knowledge the diabetic patients need to control their disease. These educations are available in two different forms: group based and tailored individualized. Group based education includes PowerPoint presentations and workshops which are designed to facilitate interpersonal communication amongst diabetic patients and thereby, furthering their information regarding their disease.

Workshops are organized and conducted to address different aspects of diabetes control. The workshop topics covered are:
  • An overview of diabetes
  • Diabetes and exercise
  • Diabetic diet
  • Diabetic foot
  • Stress management in diabetes
  • Overcoming problems regarding self-management of diabetes
  • Diabetes medications
  • Blood sugar monitoring and control

It is necessary to mention that publication of educational brochures, pamphlets, and books are amongst the multifaceted approach of diabetes clinic to patient education.

d. Diet and Nutrition Unit

All diabetic patients are referred to the Diet and Nutrition Unit of the Diabetes Clinic of the EMRI. This unit is designed to inform patients as well as to provide them with an individualized diet plan which is directed towards better controlling their disease.

e. Diabetic Foot Unit

As diabetic foot is one of the most common and grave sequels to diabetes, diabetic foot unit has been founded for the purpose of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of it. Patients with clinical presentation of diabetic foot on their visits are referred to this unit for further investigations. The treatment is provided by vascular surgeons and endocrinologists, and, all necessary minor surgical operations are performed on an outpatient basis.

f. Diagnostic Unit

A full range of diagnostic procedures are performed at the diabetes clinic such as: retinal angiography, exercise test, electrocardiography, and echocardiography. These procedures are performed by trained medical officers or nurses and the results are directly reported to the specialist consultants.

g. Specialty Clinics Units

At this unit, diabetes patients are visited by specialist consultants so that the Diabetic Clinic ensures that it covers the full spectrum of diabetes related ailments. These specialties include: cardiology, nephrology, neurology, vascular surgery, psychiatry, genetics and ophthalmology.

h. BMD Unit

All patients who present with clinical manifestations of osteoporosis are referred to this unit to undergo further investigations by means of bone mineral density measurement (BMD). Prevention or treatment services are offered to the patients for whom they are indicated.

i. Diagnostic Laboratory Unit

All necessary laboratory services needed for diabetic patients are provided at this unit. They include: biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology, and immunology. This unit is of a singular importance for the clinic as it minimizes patient transportation costs and hassles.

j. Researchers Unit

This unit is primarily designed for researchers and medical students so that they can conduct research on different aspects of diabetes in order to contribute to knowledge production and to enhance their research skills. Research unit of the diabetes specialty clinic is in close collaboration with other departments of the EMRI, and, is linked with several Iranian and overseas research institutes and universities.

k. Cell Therapy Unit

On the basis of the significant success of islet transplantation in candidate patients, cell therapy is emerging as a novel treatment for type 1 diabetes. The cell therapy unit of the Diabetes Clinic has been founded to provide treatment for diabetic patients as well as to conduct research in this field.
