UNIATF: Working with Member States to deliver the NCD-related Sustainable Development Goal targets during and beyond COVID-19
On the occasion of the opening week of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, the UNGA side-event reviewed the current work of the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on NCDs (UNIATF) and agree on the ways to provide more effective UN system support to enable countries scale up their responses to NCDs during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Russian Federation and WHO secured this side event on the margins of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, 24 September 2020 by videoconference.
Health Ministries, high level health policy makers, and other governmental stakeholders involved in ensuring a healthy environment and healthy lifestyle for the healthy population in different member states participated in this meeting.
Dr. Bagher Larijani, Vice-Chair of the National Committee on Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Disease represented Iran in the meeting.
Also, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the winners of the 2020 UN Inter-Agency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (UNIATF) awards at the « Friends of the Task Force » UN General Assembly side event on 24 September 2020.

UNIATF annual awards recognize outstanding contributions towards the NCD-related Sustainable development Goals.
In 2018, The UNIATF award went to the Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) Committee of Iran’s Ministry of Health for making an outstanding contribution to NCD prevention and control.
In line with WHO’s activities to combat NCDs, in 2015, a committee has been stablished in Iran called National Non-Communicable Disease Committee at the Ministry of Health headed by the Health Ministe.
The national plan to combat NCDs was endorsed by President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, the then Director-General of WHO Margaret Chan Fung Fu-Chun and WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ala Alwan, which was also appreciated by other countries due to not being limited to one ministry and sector but to other sectors as well.
Acknowledged by WHO, Iran has taken Iran to reduce the burden of cancer, heart and lung diseases, and diabetes have been taken worldwide.
