Global incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and healthy life expectancy (HALE) for 371 diseases and injuries in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990-2021
The GBD 2021 study provides comprehensive estimates of disease burden globally. It shows that DALYs increased from 2.63 billion in 2010 to 2.88 billion in 2021, mainly due to population growth and aging. COVID-19 became the leading cause of DALYs in 2021, followed by heart disease, neonatal disorders, and stroke. However, significant progress was made in reducing DALYs from HIV/AIDS and diarrheal diseases. Non-communicable diseases contributed most to DALYs in 2021.
