Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari Recognized as a Global Leader in Fracture Prevention
The Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari has been awarded a silver medal by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and has been officially recognized on the IOF’s global osteoporosis map as the third comprehensive center in Iran providing secondary fracture prevention (FLS) services.
In a joint collaboration between the Osteoporosis Research Center at the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institue(EMRI)and Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari, the hospital has been recognized for its outstanding efforts in providing secondary fracture prevention services in the country.
The national program for the prevention of secondary fractures caused by osteoporosis, initiated by the EMRI with the support of the Non-communicable Diseases Management Office of the Ministry of Health, is being implemented as part of the IOF's global secondary fracture prevention program.
This comprehensive and targeted program aims to prevent and manage osteoporotic fractures through various measures such as increasing the identification of osteoporosis, improving treatment rates and adherence, assessing the risk of falls and implementing appropriate strategies to reduce falls, and providing specialized patient education. This program ultimately leads to a reduction in the occurrence of recurrent fractures, improving patients' quality of life, and reducing the disease burden on society.
The pilot phase of this national program began in 2018, and during this multi-faceted collaboration, five centers have been established across the country and are currently providing comprehensive fracture prevention services. This national program is known as OsteoPad.
The FLS clinic at Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari, having signed a cooperation agreement with the Research Institute for Endocrine Sciences and Metabolism in December 2021, has begun providing extensive services in the diagnosis of osteoporosis, initiation of treatment, and education of patients who have suffered fractures due to osteoporosis. Recently, it has become the third center in Iran to receive a silver medal and be marked on the international map of collaborating centers. Previously, the FLS clinic at Shofahiyeh Hospital of Iran University of Medical Sciences and 5 Azar Hospital in Gorgan had been marked on this map with silver and bronze medals, respectively.
The global registration of the FLS center on the IOF map, in addition to enhancing the reputation of research and educational centers at the international level, facilitates collaboration with global research centers.
Given the increasing elderly population in the country and the high prevalence of osteoporosis and related fractures, especially among the elderly, the expansion of these clinics will be a turning point in improving the treatment of bone fractures and reducing the economic burden on the country.
